It’s no secret that commuting through Placer County and many greater Sacramento areas, especially during rush hour times, is no simple task. As school lets out and summer travel commences, our highways will see increased congestion. Navigating these busy roads is sure to be feeling like a bit of a challenge.
Sacramento Area Rush Hour
To magnify the issue, busy roads and anxious drivers can make for extra dangerous driving conditions. Sadly, as a result, we often see an increase in car accidents that stem from aggressive driving as those behind the wheel rush to get to their destinations – hence, the term “rush hour.”
Summer Commuters
As we embark on another summer season, commuters must do their part to practice safe driving, especially in congested areas like Highway 50, I-80, and Highway 65. A few simple tips to get through rush hour safely include:
Allow yourself more time. Plan ahead, and assume you’ll encounter busy roads. Doing so means you’ll be less likely to perform dangerous maneuvers out of frustration, such as tailgating or cutting other drivers off.
Use safe following distance. Take this time to remind yourself of the importance of leaving at least one car length between you and the vehicle in front of you. Other drivers may likely be distracted or frustrated during high traffic times, meaning you’ll need plenty of room to stop at a moment’s notice.
Avoid driving distracted. Often, drivers may assume that slower rush-hour speeds mean sending a text or dialing a number less risky. Unfortunately, this is the opposite – frequent and unexpected stopping and going means a driver’s eyes should be on the road at all times.
Opt for a different route. Luckily, Sacramento and Roseville often offer many route options for getting from point A to point B. Try opting for a different route one day to avoid extra frustration and change up the scenery. From Waze to Google Maps and more, several apps can help with this.
