A 90-year-old Roseville man was struck by a car and dragged down the road, according to recent reports. The man was found underneath the vehicle and declared dead at the scene.
Russell Victor Johnson was walking in the area of Meadowview Road and Coral Gables Court when he was struck by a car. According to the Roseville Police Department, Mr. Johnson was apparently hit by at least two cars and trapped underneath one of the vehicles, unbeknownst to the driver, who continued to drive a short ways down the road.
Police are still investigating the accident, but did state that the driver of the vehicle did not appear to be impaired while driving. No charges have been filed as of this time.
Pedestrians At High Risk for Death and Serious Injury
Pedestrians face dangers every time they cross the road, walk in a parking lot, or jog in a park. Distracted drivers are the number one reason pedestrians are injured in accidents. However, other factors such as blind spots, dangerous road conditions, or impaired driving may also account for pedestrian accidents.
The injuries sustained in a pedestrian-vehicle accident are often so severe the victim does not survive. If the victim does survive, the injuries sustained may be of such a nature that the person never fully recovers.
Because pedestrians are not protected by metal as those in a vehicle are, they suffer the most bodily damage when struck by a vehicle.
According to a recent article, California leads the nation in pedestrian accidents and fatalities with an average of 620 per year, or nearly two deaths per day. More than 75 percent of these accidents occur at non-intersection locations.
Pedestrians should be sure to use crosswalks when available and to watch out for drivers who may not see them. However, even if a pedestrian uses every possible precaution, an accident can still happen.
